Summary:
Gregory Mathews, like many other ornithologists, vacillated between believing that the Night Parrot was extinct or extant. In The Birds of Australia (1917), he flagged its extinction, but, in 1940, after hearing of Bourgoin’s discoveries, he was on his way to Western Australia in search of the parrot. Mathews was not a field researcher, so it is not clear what he intended and nothing eventuated. Illustration by Roland Green from The Birds of Australia, Volume 3, plate XLIV.
