Summary: 
Components of a basic ground-nest (diagrammatic): (a) partly completed nest (tumulus) develops on surface of ground as loose soil is pushed out of shaft entrance; lateral burrows and cells are built one at a time; once a cell is sealed, its access burrow is back-filled with soil (indicated by stippling)); (b) two brood cells built in linear series at the end of a lateral burrow (cap of cell 1 forms base of cell 2).
