Summary:
This Lesser Hairy-footed Dunnart (Sminthopsis youngsoni) was excavated accidentally at the bottom of a scorpion burrow in the Simpson Desert, central Australia. The burrows of large desert scorpions descend in a characteristic corkscrew shape to depths of ∼10 cm. The spiral pattern of the burrow can be seen above the dunnart. The tiny radio-tag, with its long antenna made from piano wire, can be seen attached between the dunnart’s shoulders. Enterprising dunnarts find scorpion burrows to provide a snug fit and probably, on occasion at least, a ready meal of the scorpion itself. Source: Chris Dickman.
