Summary:
Quolls (Dasyurus spp.) were encountered by settlers almost as soon as they stepped ashore after a long sea voyage. To many colonists they were pests; ferocious predators of livestock, especially poultry. Early representations, such as this one by a painter from Port Jackson (possibly Thomas Watling who died in 1814), are not terribly accurate. This is partly because the strange Australian mammals were often merged taxonomically and artistically with known species from other continents, which they superficially resemble.
