Summary:
One of only two species of New Guinean carnivorous marsupial described by Oldfield Thomas: the Black-tailed Dasyure (Murexia melanurus). The species varies incredibly in size, colour and distribution and is likely to contain a suite of cryptic (i.e. hidden) species. Thomas hungered for more New Guinean specimens to describe, but his collectors were mostly unable to overcome the many perils and difficulties presented to any explorer game enough to venture into the island’s dark interior.
