Summary:
Oldfield Thomas originally named the Long-tailed Planigale (Planigale ingrami) as a species of Phascogale in 1906. The unique genus of Planigale was not nominated until Curator of Mammals at the Australian Museum Ellis Le Geyt Troughton erected it in 1928 to accommodate the three species of small, flat-headed dasyurids known from Australia at the time.
