Summary:
A three-striped dasyure (Myoictis sp.) from New Guinea. This exceptional artwork dates to 1858 and was published in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. The artist was one Joseph Wolf, a German who specialised in natural history illustration. He moved to the British Museum in 1848 and became a preferred illustrator for explorers and naturalists of renown. These included famed African explorer David Livingston (‘Dr Livingstone I presume?’) and Alfred Russell Wallace, who independently of Darwin conceived the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. Wolf depicted animals accurately in life-like postures and is considered a pioneer of wildlife art. Sir Edwin Landseer, himself a prodigious 19th century British artist, once claimed that Wolf was ‘… without exception, the best all-round animal artist who ever lived.’ Source: Wikimedia Commons.
