Summary:
Fig. 7.2. Schematic representation of changes in abundance of birds, including granivores, nectar-feeders, omnivores and insectivores, in an avian assemblage through several years at a location in arid Australia. The horizontal axis is time; numbers of individuals are shown vertically. Sedentary species are at the core of the assemblage, being permanent residents even though they decline somewhat during drier times. Overlying the residents are nomadic and migratory species that arrive in large numbers after heavy rain, often to breed, and then disperse as the country dries out. Numbers of species increase after rain in a similar pattern, but the peak is relatively smaller.70
