Summary:
Age determination of rats according to the index developed by Karnoukhova.318 Upper right molars drawn by A. Veale, based on ship rats from Pureora FP, New Zealand, classified by M. Flux and C.M. King. The class definitions given here were first drafted by B.M. Fitzgerald and B.J. Karl. ‘Tubercle’ is a small elevation arising on the surface of a tooth; ‘dentine’ is the hard, calcareous, bone-like matter that is the principal mass of a tooth, beneath the ‘enamel’; a ‘cusp’ is a pointed part of a tooth. In this figure, worn enamel is drawn pale grey, exposed dentine is drawn dark grey, and blackened valleys between tubercles are drawn black. Karnoukhova318 derived the indices from known-age Norway rats; the indices have never been verified against known-age rats in New Zealand. M = molar; t = tubercle. (Illustrations drawn by Andrew J. Veale.)
