Summary: 
The Wapiti Area in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand. With the exception of a few escaped farmed wapiti, this area contains New Zealand’s only wild wapiti herd, all of which have now hybridised with red deer. The area is divided into three management units: the core area, which has deer most similar to wapiti in physical appearance; the coastal area, which is heavily forested and from which it is difficult to selectively remove western red deer–like animals; and the northern and southern fringe areas, which contain a high proportion of western red deer in their respective populations. The original release site of pure wapiti is shown at the head of George Sound.
