Summary:
Variation in abundance of an introduced predator (cat, left) and its prey (wallaby, right) in response to variation in the effectiveness of a management action (line labels) which is applied annually to the predator. Between 0.27 and 0.57 (27–57%) of the cat population is removed each year. Due to fluctuating predator–prey dynamics, the hypothetical island used to generate these results will support 200 wallabies if there are 16 cats (removing 27% cats each year). More than 37% of cats need to be removed each year to raise the number of wallabies above the objective. The optimiser will use the cost of implementing cat control to determine whether managers should remove more than 37% of the cat population each year.
