Summary: 
Distribution of magpies in Australia. Latin names of subspecies are listed in each marked region of their occurrence; striped areas indicate that two or more adjacent subspecies can be found. It is seen clearly here that white-backed magpies occur in the south of the continent and in Tasmania, while black-backed magpies occupy the rest of Australia to the very north of the continent, including also the ninth subspecies of G. t. papuana. Unfortunately, the specimens that have been tagged, as Fig. 2.3 shows, are inconclusive (either white-backed or black-backed). Adapted from and based on Schodde and Mason.5
