Summary:
The structure of a feather. Melanin is deposited in the barbs and barbules of the feather at the time of growth of the feather. Once that has happened, no new supply of melanin reaches the feather for the length of the feather’s life. (Drawings from Ask a Biologist,4 CC BY-SA 3.0)
