Summary:
The genus Podophyllum, which was the original source of podophyllotoxin, has been used in herbal medicine for centuries in Asia, particularly in Chinese, Japanese and Indian traditions. Mayapple herbs (listed as P. peltatum, P. hexandrum or P. emodi in the older literature) have been utilised for treating remarkably diverse disorders: gout, fevers, tuberculosis, gonorrhoea, syphilis, menstrual problems, dropsy, cough, psoriasis, skin growths and venereal warts [304].
