Summary:
Zingiber zerumbet flower heads contain a juice that was used as a shampoo, while the flowers provided a perfumed hair rinse, hence the common name ‘Shampoo Ginger’. The rhizomes contain zerumbone, which provides another interesting chemical link between the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) and the laurels. Chinese Lindera essential oil contains respectable amounts (zerumbone 27%); however, the content Zingiber zerumbet rhizomes (35–85%) is exceptionally high, which appears to influence the immunomodulatory, anti-asthmatic and anti-allergic properties of this herb [260].
