Summary:
Burnt soil 1 year after fire (Galicia, north-west Spain). Three distinct layers can be identified: (a) has suffered near-complete SOC combustion with loss of soil structure; (b) a substantial amount of SOC remains in the form of PyC materials formed by pyrolysis; (c) SOC-rich layer of brownish colour largely unaffected by fire. Soil type: umbric leptosol; bedrock type: granite.
