Summary: 
The position of the ears. This juvenile skull and beak have not yet fully acquired adult shape. Note that the ear is positioned as a long vertical slit, slightly tilted, behind the eyes. At this age, the ear is covered by a skin-flap that was removed for the sake of taking these images. (Images from the autopsy of a nestling close to fledging that died as a consequence of a cat attack.)
