Summary: 
Features of the habitat known to have an influence on coral reef fish species richness. Fish species richness is higher with: (A) higher topographic complexity; at (B) intermediate coral cover; (C) with higher coral species diversity; (D) with habitat dominated by branching and corymbose corals, rather than encrusting or massive corals; (E) with great spatial heterogeneity of microhabitats, including live and dead coral substrata; (F) with greater temporal variability in habitat composition; (G) in shallow water, compared with deep reefs; and (H) on offshore reefs, compared with coastal reefs (Drawings: Maya Srinivasan).
