Summary: 
The nitrogen cycle associated with coral reefs. The fixation of nitrogen into organic compounds occurs in the water column (above the sediments). Plants take up ammonium and may be eaten by herbivores, with the embedded ammonium being released and recycled, with the burial of some of this organic material. At this point, the ammonium ions released may participate in assimilatory nitrate reduction in the sediment layers that have relatively high oxygen levels. Nitrate may then be denitrified in the underlying sediments where oxygen concentrations are low. The colours associated with the left-hand diagram indicate when the majority of each part of the cycle occurs within the water and sediment profile (indicated in the right-hand diagram) (Figure: D. Kleine and O. Hoegh-Guldberg).
