Summary:
The arrival of cane toads in an area induces precipitous declines in the populations of some taxa of predators that are fatally poisoned when they attempt to ingest the toxic toads. One of the most vulnerable taxa is the yellow-spotted monitor, Varanus panoptes. (A) A live lizard. (B) a radio-tracked animal that died after consuming a cane toad. Photographs by R. Somaweera and G. Ward-Fear, used with permission.
