   Construction of a simple plankton net from a wire coat hanger and half a nylon stocking: (A) the coat hanger is stretched into a circle ~30 cm diameter; (B) the circle is twisted into a figure-of eight and folded over, (C) to make a double wire ring; (D) the top of the pantihose is stretched over the wire circle and taped in place around the leading edge; (E) the three bridle strings are attached by puncturing through the tape with a pencil and tying the string around the wire circle at three equally spaced points on the circumference of the net frame; (F) the pantihose toes are the cut and a jar is then firmly tied on the end, ensuring that it can be undone (or access the sample by pushing the jar up through the net to the mouth); (G) the completed net; (H, I) gently tow the net from a small boat in a circle, or from a jetty or pontoon.
