Summary:
RNA silencing-based virus resistance strategies involve production of small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) like small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) or microRNAs (miRNAs) targeted against viral transcript. Various gene construct design strategies like antisense RNA, intron-spliced hairpin RNA (ihpRNA), inverted repeats (IR) and artificial miRNA (amiRNA) are depicted. The silencing of viral transcript occurs due to a sequence homology dependent silencing process called RNA interference (RNAi). The effector molecules of silencing (siRNA and amiRNA), their amplification and spread of silencing signals are also presented.
