Summary:
Deep underneath a black smoker, a magma chamber heats up water that circulates through the rocks. Because hot liquids rise due to convection, the hot water – which is black, salty, and rich in metal and sulfur – pours out of the vent into the cool, deep ocean. Sulfide minerals form as the hot water meets the cold, and are deposited on the slopes of the vents. This builds up the sides of the black smoker to form a cone-shaped structure.
