Summary:
Radar time-series trends from 13–27 October 2016 were influenced by swings in temperature and refractivity, shown in the lower two graphs. Refractivity spikes occur when the air density changes rapidly due to swings in temperature and humidity, such as when a thunderstorm approaches the mine. Rapid changes in air density cause energy from the radar to deflect, despite the use of atmospheric correction; false alarms can then occur (source: R. Turner and R. Wu).
