Figure 10. When obstacles such as young plants are exposed to sand-laden winds, they act as focal points for dune building seen here in a dune deflation area (left) and with Cakile maritima on the strand (right). If the plant maintains growth above the accreting sand, the mini-dune can then provide habitat for other plants, leading to successional processes and, with time, creation of a permanent dune feature.
