Summary:
Figure 17. Diagrammatic representation of contrasting growth forms in Spinifex hirsutus (top) and Spinifex longifolius (bottom) where the former species spreads laterally by using foraging rhizomes that grow through the sand with sand accreted by axillary shoots arising from the rhizome. In contrast, S. longifolius has adapted to life on coastal dunes by producing lateral and vertical shoots that trap sand and result in mounds that are more vertically developed than found in S. hirsutus.
