Summary:
Figure 12.1: The traditional heathland management cycle and change in Calluna structure with age. Based on the stages of the Calluna cycle from Watt (1955). In the pioneer phase, young seedlings develop or shoots regrow from stem bases until canopy closure occurs in the building phase. Building phase structures can be maintained by grazing and mowing, but overgrazing can lead to conversion to grassland. Plants begin to lose vigour in the mature phase and gaps begin to open up. In the degenerate phase, significant gaps form and older stems become more prostrate; Calluna seedlings colonise the gaps and a mixed-age stand results, with individual bushes showing different life phases. Continued lack of management leads to woodland encroachment. Reproduced from Velle et al. (2021).
