Summary:
Plate 7: The historic extent of the tallgrass prairie extended from present day Canada to near the Gulf of Mexico. Only approximately 4% of the tallgrass remains as prairie due to land conversion, primarily to farming, woodland and development. The largest contiguous tallgrass expanse remaining in North America is the Flint Hills region of Kansas and Oklahoma, located in the central US. Map created by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), North America Conservation Region, GIS Laboratory, Minneapolis, MN, October 2010.
