Summary: 
Figure 9.8: A ring fire is the most common type of ignition strategy. Starting at a downwind side or corner, a backfire is lit and closely monitored to create a fuel break. Gradually both sides of the burn unit are lit simultaneously. After an adequate fuel break has been created on the downwind and flank sides of the fire, the upwind side is lit, creating a headfire that burns into the fuel breaks.
