Summary:
PORT JACKSON PAINTER Rainbow Bee-eater Merops ornatus. Watercolour, 21.2 × 19.2 cm; c. 1788–1792. The annotation points out that the colours were more brilliant than the artist’s palette allowed, and that the Eora name was ‘Dee-weed-gang.’ This painting and that of the Swift Parrot are similar in style and palette and are unlike the more fluid goshawk (p. 28), also attributed to the collective known as the Port Jackson Painter.
