Summary:
CAROLINE POUNDS Java Sparrows Lonchura oryzivora. Watercolour; c. 1845. Mid-nineteenth century, Java Sparrows were introduced to the Australian mainland in their hundreds by acclimatisation societies actively seeking to Europeanise the Australian wildlife, but the sparrows did not establish. They occur naturally on the Australian territory of Christmas Island. They were present as cagebirds in Pounds’ time, and are now endangered in their natural range in eastern Indonesia.
