Summary:
Main uses of stable isotope analysis in food web studies at the different organisation levels and conceptual scales, from individual to ecosystem. For example, stable isotope analysis can be used to reconstruct the diets of individuals or populations, but cannot be used to describe the diets of overall communities or ecosystems. On the other hand, trophic niche sizes and niche overlaps can be estimated for populations or communities, but such analyses would not make sense at the individual or ecosystem levels.
