Summary:
Survey methods used by the LTMP include (A) manta tow surveys, which are a broad-scale technique for quickly assessing the status of coral reefs where an observer is towed behind a small boat around entire reef perimeters and records the categorical percentage of hard and soft coral cover, as well as numbers of crown-of-thorns starfish and coral trout, and (B) fixed sites surveyed along permanently marked transects where the benthos is quantified using digital imagery, and reef fishes and agents of coral mortality are recorded using visual census.
