Summary:
A new Australian marsupial species – the Tasman Peninsula Dusky Antechinus (Antechinus vandycki). The species was discovered in a tiny stand of fragmented temperate rainforest in south-eastern Tasmania and named in 2015. This carnivorous marsupial looks like, and behaves similarly to, the shrew-opossums of South America and the murexias of New Guinea, even though the three groups last shared common ancestry perhaps 90 million years ago.
