Distinguishing features of murids found in New Zealand. The four rodent species in New Zealand, drawn to scale with mean measurements from tables in respective species chapters. From top: Kiore (Polynesian, Pacific rat), ship (roof, black) rat, house mouse, Norway (brown) rat. Kiore are regarded as absent from all of mainland New Zealand except parts of Fiordland, Southland and south Westland. Ship rats are found as three main ‘morphs’ or coat colours (p. 195, Table 6.5).
