Summary:
Magpies and birds of prey in Taveuni, Fiji. For magpies, living in palm trees on Taveuni provided some protection from the weather but not from birds of prey. They were not only plentiful on the island but they are also ambush hunters and roosted in exactly the same areas as magpies. Magpies had to be extremely vigilant at all times to stay alive in the presence of very agile hunters. In the left image they were directly looking at a raptor in the next palm tree (middle image). The right image is a local swamp harrier.
