Thermocouple installation: minimise interference between temperature readings and measuring equipment by installation sensors in a radial pattern (a, Stoof et al. 2011), or installing sensors a few cm apart (b, Massman et al. 2003). ‘Top’, ‘Mid’, and ‘Bottom’ indicate the position of the thermocouples, which can be labelled with differently coloured tape (e.g. electrical tape in the colours of a national flag such as red-white-blue) at the start of the cable to avoid placement errors upon installation.
