Summary:
Nestling vocalisations. (a) Sounds made while hungry, but in the absence of adults, that is, they cannot be regarded as begging calls because they are emitted both in the absence of parents and in their presence (before foraging excursions). These calls stop once the chicks are fed. Note the dots along the x-axis – this is the accelerated ‘oom’ sound by an adult. (b) Intermittent calling performed almost as if coughing. The function is not clear but it could be discomfort. (c) The call of fear is a very loud, noisy call interspersed with some tonal elements. Note ‘the ladders’ within the call. These are harmonics which make them sound like high-pitched shrieking.
