Summary:
Trophic linkages between plankton and coral reefs: ‘the wall of mouths’ (see also Chapter 8). Fish that feed on plankton (planktivores) crop the larger plankton as it flows past the reef, and other suspension feeders such as corals and sponges feed on the very small plankton. Plankton is also an important source of energy for the reef as the fall-out of the excreta planktivores reaches the bottom to drive production. Eventually the fish themselves become a source of food for reef predators. To the right, demersal zooplankton rises into the water column at night and becomes available to nocturnal planktivores such as cardinalfish.
