Data and models of flame residence time for (a) model results from Nelson (2003) (line) compared to data from Catchpole et al. (1998) (dots); (b) a regression model from data by Wilson (1982); (c) a regression model on the cardboard fuel data from Finney et al. (2015) with moisture content of ~6%; and (d) comparison of models. β is packing ratio (dimensionless), σ is surface-area-to-volume ratio (m–1), m″f is fuel loading (kg m–2) and MF is fuel moisture fraction (mass of water as a fraction of oven dry fuel mass).
