Summary:
Plate tectonics leaves clues in the rocks. The top row shows faults that can form due to different types of plate movement, when tectonic plates diverge (move apart), converge (smash together) or rub past each other (transform). The purple and red shading represents rock layers of different ages. If convergence is really strong, mountains can form, as shown in the second row. The layers of rock in a mountain can be folded, fractured and even turned over, leaving a puzzle like that shown at the bottom for geoscientists to try and put together.
