Summary:
Two ephemeral lakes in inland New South Wales. Top: Buddah Lake, 10 October 1967 (Film number CAC7010, run 1, frame 80); available at Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia’s) Archival Aerial Photography. When visited by Charles Sturt in December 1828 Buddah Lake contained several metres of water; here, after almost 4 dry years, it is nearly dry. Bottom: Lake Cowal (Google Earth, image compiled 31 December 2002). Between December 2000, when the lake covered approximately three-quarters of the lakebed, and the end of 2002, after 2 dry years, Lake Cowal had shrunk to a very small swampy area at the southern end of the lake. It may have looked similar in mid-1828. The white dashed line indicates the approximate extent of each lake when full, while the inner black dotted line indicates the approximate extent of water when the image was taken.
