When visited by Charles Sturt in December 1828 Buddah Lake contained several metres of water; here, after almost 4 dry years, it is nearly dry. Between December 2000, when the lake covered approximately three-quarters of the lakebed, and the end of 2002, after 2 dry years, Lake Cowal had shrunk to a very small swampy area at the southern end of the lake. It may have looked similar in mid-1828. The white dashed line indicates the approximate extent of each lake when full, while the inner black dotted line indicates the approximate extent of water when the image was taken.
