Summary:
FERDINAND BAUER Hooded Parrot Psephotellus dissimilis, Watercolour. The parrot was collected at Arnhem Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria, on 6 February 1803. Bauer’s elegant painting shows two adult male Hooded Parrots, but there is no record of a specimen being taken back to England. Several species, mostly of plants, were described and named from Bauer’s paintings and specimens. However, this painting was mistakenly thought to be of Golden-shouldered Parrots and the Hooded Parrot was not described until 1899, from a specimen collected by explorer Knud Dhal.
