Summary:
CAROLINE LOUISA ATKINSON Tree Martins Petrochelidon nigricans. Pencil, ink and watercolour, 33.8 × 27.7 cm; c. 1860s. As a child, Atkinson was taught to draw by her mother Charlotte, who had some art training in England. She was also taught to live a useful life, choosing to serve science, particularly botany. Her illustrations are the fresh impressions of a nature enthusiast, made at a time when there was little reference material. MITCHELL LIBRARY, STATE LIBRARY OF NEW SOUTH WALES
