Figure 4.4: Many animals get caught on and killed by barbed wire fences, including species of conservation concern such as the Squirrel Glider and Little Red Flying Fox (bottom left). In the top left photo, the top strand of a barbed wire fence is being replaced to limit wildlife entanglement. While avoiding or replacing barbed wire is ideal, when this is not possible an alternative approach is to cover the top strand of a barbed wire fence with poly pipe (right) in high-traffic areas.
