Summary: 
Simplified representation of using quantile regression splines (QRS) to correlate changes in taxa distributions to an ecological state or environmental variable. The abundance of Austrovenus stutchburyi (cockles) was plotted against the percentage of mud in sediment. The regression spline model is shown for the 95th percentile with the maximum from the model (the estimated optimum for cockles being 11.3% mud) indicated by the vertical line.
