Summary:
Koalas are one of the many culturally significant species that were impacted by Australia’s 2019–20 wildfires. The portion of the koala population that is in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Queensland was listed as nationally Vulnerable before the fires, but was up-listed to Endangered in February 2022. Koalas in South Australia and Victoria are not listed as threatened; koalas have been introduced to some places, including Kangaroo Island.
