More work on the background was done by using the original background wash with a touch of Winsor Violet added. With this darker wash, more definition of trees and leaves was added, but without too much detail.Lichens and the branch were worked up using a very pale wash of Winsor Blue (Green Shade) for the lichens and a pale wash of Sepia for the branch. Some Winsor Violet was added to the Sepia for shadows. Detail of the lichens and branch were developed to a point where it was evident that the tonal values of the background and lichen-covered branch were going to work.The shadow of the female was cast onto the branch using Sepia mixed with Winsor Violet. This shadow also runs over some of the lichen. The detail within this shadow now gives the effect of light within shade.
