Summary: 
As the collared animal approaches the exclusion (shock) zone boundary, it receives a series of warning cues (typically a vibration or tone) that intensify as it approaches the boundary. The shock is paired with the warning, and the latter thus becomes the stimulus it conditions to (e.g. respond to with avoidance). Illustration by Bradley Smith.
